Why
use a Mutual Funds module?
Financial Advisors, Investment
Consultants, Account Executives….investment professionals that work directly
with clients go by many titles. But their businesses are similar in one
way: they are increasingly selling packaged, managed products instead
of individual stocks and bonds.
Your home office support team
needs to understand the differences between mutual funds and stocks. They
wonder why there are completely different departments dealing with similar
processes, such as order entry, clearance, transfers, dividends, etc.
It’s time you provided them clear, consistent, easy to understand answers.
This module was created to
continue the introductory education of an employee new to the securities
industry at today’s broker-dealer. Mutual Funds are an essential part
of any broker-dealer’s product line. This module addresses the learning
needs created by this unique product.
How
is this integrated with Brokerage Industry Basics?
In Brokerage Industry Basics,
the participants learn about the relationship between Transfer Agents,
DTC, the Broker-Dealer and the customer. In this module, we build on that
understanding as the participants learn the concept that there is NO DTC
for mutual funds! Instead, we interact directly with each fund company,
which creates many of the operational challenges that surround processing
mutual fund trades and maintaining mutual fund accounts.
Course
objectives
After completing this module,
participants will be able to:
- Describe the difference
for your Broker-Dealer (B-D) in maintaining a networking relationship
with a mutual fund company compared to an omnibus relationship.
- Explain how the processing
of a mutual fund trade is different from processing a stock trade.
- Compare the processing of
a mutual fund dividend to processing a stock dividend.
- Explain how a customer's
existing mutual fund position is brought on to your B-D’s books and
records.
- Explain how the processing
of an annuity trade is different from processing a stock trade.
- Explain the role of your
B-D in an annuity transaction involving an introducing broker, their
customer and an insurance company.
- Identify the departments
within a typical mutual fund area at a B-D and the primary responsibility
of each one.
